The Journey

Day 1

Welcome to Nagarkot Community Homestay

Your homestay is about two hours’ drive from Kathmandu. When you arrive you will be welcomed to the family home by your host. You will be taken for a walk to explore the village and surrounding area.

Day 2

Explore the wonders of Nagarkot

Admiring the Sunrise is what most people come to Nagarkot for. After an early morning wake up call, some tea and a light snack for breakfast you walk a short way up to the viewpoint where you can admire the sun rise over the Himalayas. Here too is a fascinating little temple where you will see local people coming to worship. You will have the opportunity to take a yoga class that is run by one of the brothers of the families from the Community Homestay. Here your session will be held where you can also enjoy the view of the hills around you. Returning to your family homestay for brunch, you then go to explore the nearby forest and waterfalls with your guide.read more

Day 3

Hike to Changu Narayan Temple (2-3 hrs) and sightseeing in Bhaktapur

After your last session of yoga you join your family for breakfast. You then hike down to Changu Narayan Temple, about 8 kilometres down from your homestay. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and said to be the oldest temple in Nepal, it has a shrine dating back to 325AD. It is dedicated to Lord Visnu and was reconstructed in 1702 after a devastating fire. As well as the main temple there are numerous shrines at the premises dedicated to Lord Shiva, Ashta Matrika, Chhinnamasta, Kileshwor and Krishna. Life-size pairs of animals such as lions, sarabhas, griffins and elephants guard the four entrances. There are a number of festivals celebrated here such as Changu Narayan Jatra (January) which is marked by smashing earthen pots to halt the journey of the deities from returning to Bhaktapur. Mahashanan is another important festival held here and on the days of ‘Jugadi Nawami’ and ‘Haribodhini Ekadashi’ special pujas can be observed, though every day there are daily pujas and ‘aarati’ a Hindu religious ritual of worship, where light (usually from a flame) is offered to one or more deities in the temple. You are then transferred to Bhaktapur which is just a few kilometres away to explore this ‘must see’ UNESCO World Heritage Site. You are then transferred back to Kathmandu where your trip ends.read more
