Kayaking the Fjords of Kenai, AK

  • Basecamp Retreat
  • Active Adventure
  • 7 days; 6 nights
  • 1 to 8 travelers
  • Begins & ends in Anchorage
The coastal fjords of the Kenai Peninsula is one of the most productive marine ecosystem in the world during the summer. The access to wildlife and tidewater glaciers is unmatched. This is also a delicate ecosystem that is changing rapidly, with catastrophic sea bird die offs, glacial retreat, and incredible loss of habitat. These changes are tangible here, and we will viscerally explore the nuances of this rapidly-changing bioregion. But the Kenai Peninsula is a place defined by hope, resilience, and inspiration. Where wilderness endures, and wildlife thrives. Sewardites are deeply connected to the water. They fish, boat, kayak, and are all in some way connected to the water. This Journey is a deep immersion into fjord country, with a focus on glaciation, productivity in the ocean, wildlife, and the intersectionality of the natural world and us. The adventure will include a 3 day sea kayaking trip in Kenai Fjords National Park, a guided hike to the Harding Icefield with a focus on climate change communication, and time spent with Seward Wilderness Collective volunteering for our first annual Farmers Market.read more

Trent Gould was drawn to the Kenai Fjords for its unique potential to reach deep down into people – to move people, beyond their expectations or dreams. It’s the landscapes, the wildlife, the sheer abundance and scale of this place. His purpose in life is to facilitate meaningful experiences for people in the natural world.

The Journey

Day 1

Travel day

Guests fly into ANC and take a shuttle to Seward. Welcome dinner (not provided by KAW). SWC guides can come greet the group in the evening, after 7pm, to talk about the hiking tour the next day.

Day 2

Hike Harding Icefield

This is where we lay the foundation of the trip. This is a private guided hiking tour to the Harding Icefield, where all the ice flows from into Kenai Fjords National Park. This purposeful hike explores the connection between land, ice, and water. This tour focuses on glaciation, wildlife, and climate change. The tidewater glaciers we will be visiting later on the kayaking tour start here. The learning that is generated on this land based tour will be the foundation we will build upon throughout the kayaking trip. After the hike, we will host a pre-trip meeting at 7pm where we will go over logistics for the upcoming kayaking trip. Weather, gear, wildlife, etc.read more
