Espen grew up in northern Norway, and has always had a strong relation with life outdoors. His parents used to bring him on fjellskis visiting reindeer herders all around the county. Espen studied outdoor activities, combined with Ranger studies and nature & cultural history in Telemark. He is also a certified canoe instructor. He accomplished several 2 to 3 months expeditions, by ski, canoe and dogsled, in Norway and Canada. He also ran 5 times the Finnmarksløpet, longest sleddog race in Europe. With him, be sure tha you are in very good hands to explore the Norwegian wilderness!
We will pick you up at Bardufoss airport or Buktamoen bus station and travel to our log-house and lodge in the heart of Målselv region. At our farm you will meet the group around a welcoming dinner and enjoy some social time together. We will look at the maps of the region and the weather forecast together, go through the planning, complete your equipment if necessary, and prepare for our coming adventures.read more
After breakfast we will meet our happy and friendly huskies and feed them before preparing for a training run. You will get to know your dog team, which you will have for the rest of the week. We will spend around 3 hours on the sleds to learn the basics before returning to the farm. In the afternoon we go through the trip plans and prepare for an early start the next day.
After breakfast we will load the dogs and equipment onto the car and trailer and drive 1 hour to the starting point for our trip into Dividalen. Here we pack everything needed for spending the next days in the mountains. There is about 35 km of travel trough the mountains to reach the beautiful and modern cabin of Dertahytta, where we spend our first night away from civilization.
Day 3 to 7 we will explore the Dividalen area, one of the biggest wilderness areas in Europe, by dogsled. Depending on weather and snow conditions we can visit places like Rostadalen, Vouma, and Gamas. Each day we will travel between 25 km and 60 km ( 4 – 6 hours) through beautiful landscapes. We will have lunch on the trail and spend nights in mountain huts or in a tent camp. The mountains' remoteness and potentially challenging weather conditions demand a flexible tour schedule and good physical shape of the participants. The tour will be adjusted to the weather on a daily basis! On this tour, close cooperation between humans and dogs is particularly important! You will have your own dog team for which you are responsible during the tour.read more
